The Prius is capable of getting 51 MPG zipping through the city and 48 MPG for highway travel, while only emitting 8,688 lbs of CO2 a year during an easily driven 15,000 miles of use and only expect to pay an annual cost of 9 in fuel.

 

As far as performance goes, don’t expect a miracle. However, by hybrid standards the acceleration is not that bad. The Prius is capable of getting you from a stand-still to 60 mph in 9.2 seconds. Not sports-car fast, but remember this is a green, gas-sipping compact sedan. Couple that with the independent suspension and you are in for a very enjoyable ride. The interior is very spacious for a compact car as well. The Prius seats 5 and has an interior passenger volume of 93.7 cubic feet. The cargo capacity will allow up to 21.6 cubic feet for those long trips or busy supermarket days.

 

Some may expect ‘s to have a high MSRP, but the entry cost of the Prius is surprisingly low. The starting MSRP for the Prius is ,800. Add on some high-tech options like solar powered ventilation, collision detection and GPS navigation and the cost can jump to well over ,000. Toyota will also back your purchase with a 3-year/36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty, a 6-year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty along with an 8-year/80,000 mile warranty for hybrid component systems. The Volkswagen Jetta TDI implores a completely different type of technology, a turbo direct injection (TDI) diesel engine that produces 140 horsepower and a staggering 236 lb-ft of torque. Now, this diesel engine is mechanically no different than other diesel engines except for the fact that it is capable of using Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD). This cleaner diesel fuel contains lower sulfur amounts than the previous diesel fuel of the past. In fact, ULSD contains 97% less sulfur than the older standard of diesel contained (15 ppm vs. 500 ppm). This new standard was to be fully implemented in the United States by 2010 by all fuel stations and refineries and is mandated by law. The use of ULSD allows the Jetta TDI to implement pollution technologies that will filter out the other emissions that come from the burning of the diesel.

 

Since the Jetta takes advantage of the technology it uses to lower emissions, the fuel economy of the car is improved as well. This diesel sedan can get 30 MPG in town driving and 42 MPG on the highway. In a year, driving 15,000 miles, the Jetta TDI outputs 10,717 lbs of CO2 and will run you about ,314 in fuel cost. The optional 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic sport-shift transmission make the Jetta sportier and more fun for the driver. These options also allow the Jetta to edge out the Prius in the 0-60 stat by 1 second or so at 8.2 seconds. The Jetta’s cabin can seat 5 as well, but lacks in the interior volume compared to the Prius, only providing 91 cubic feet of space for it’s passengers. The cargo space is also less coming in at a mere 16 cubic feet.

 

A clean diesel Jetta TDI will cost you a minimum MSRP of ,830. The first question you may have is “What exactly is a solar powered car, anyway?” A solar powered car is essentially, an electric car. Instead of getting a charge or recharge from being plugged into an electrical outlet, the electricity needed to run the motor comes directly from solar energy panels that are attached to the car.

Solar powered cars currently use photovoltaic (PV) solar energy panels that capture the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity.

Mostly, right now, solar powered cars are concept cars. You’ll see them in showrooms at automobile design shows where manufacturers are presenting automobiles they plan to manufacture…later. There are some, of course, that are operational. But they’re not created to run long distances, and they take a lot of sunlight to operate.

The photovoltaic panels that are used to operate these cars capture the sun’s ray and convert it into enough electricity to run the electric motor that powers the car. Any additional electrical power is directed to a battery for storage. Most of the solar powered cars built today are used for racing. They are very lightweight and have small cockpits with just enough room for the driver. The solar energy panels that are built for these cars cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. And…they can only run for very short distances.

So…in answer to the question “Is a solar powered car effective?”…I think you would have to say, “In very limited application for now.”

As the technology evolves, however, solar powered cars hold a promise of helping us reduce or eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels, together with carbon dioxide discharge that is leaving such an adverse environmental imprint. There are actually new technologies that allow solar energy cells to be placed in paint. Soon…that could mean the paint on your automobile can generate and collect enough energy to run your car.

If we are to truly have an impact on reducing global warming, we need to take a long, hard look at all of our energy consumption, including our vehicles. To resist further legislation or incentives that would really produce tangible results, automobile and fossil fuel energy industries have lobbied long and hard. This has resulted in a continuing strong market for SUV’s and other large vehicles that burn twice as much fuel and double the carbon emission. It’s also slowed the progress to create strong, solid legislation for automobile emission reduction.

The technology in the solar powered automobile holds great promise. Solar powered cars can run fast…and produce no pollution. No carbon dioxide…and no noise, as the solar panels work silently to collect and store energy.

While there are no full solar vehicles currently on the market for the average driver, SPEV, or solar powered electrical vehicles are starting to hit the market for use by the general public. Built like the concept cars and racing prototypes, they are nearly always a one person vehicle capable of short commutes or short distance driving before they need to be plugged in for recharging. One SPEV, however, that’s showing promise is the solar-powered five-door Blue Car hatchback. Being produced in Europe, the ad for this vehicle in inhabitat.com states: “The solar panels on the vehicle’s roof provides some power to the vehicle’s systems. It comes with regenerative brakes and a Lithium Metal Polymer batteries, and has a range of 155 miles per charge. According to the manufacturer, all the materials in the construction have been sourced to be as environmentally friendly as possible.”

Honda CR-Z Mugen – New Hybrid Car Taking Over The UK Market By Storm

MUGEN is quite similar to CR-Z but with some little changes here and there. CR-Z MUGEN has a 1.5L engine and runs on petrol. Expect certain improvements on the exhaust, hybrid motor, ECU and the induction.
