Can I get full coverage auto insurance on a car that was once totaled?

Filed in Auto Insurance Coverage 3 Comments

My dad owns a 1992 Firebird that he (supposedly) totaled last year. Here’s the story, there was a really bad storm, and his boss demanded that he was not only at his job but on time. So my dad rushed on his way to work, and hydroplaned on a back road that is prone to flooding. He got it towed back to the house and later that day he filed a report to the insurance agency that it was totaled. He got the money for the totaled car, and he used the money to drain the engine, change the oil, put in new spark plugs, get new carpet, etc. The car now runs, but it has 274,000 miles, and the told him he can never get his full coverage reinstated. I beg to differ, seeing as how I’m going to inherit this car soon, and I want to replace the old worn-out motor anyways, and with a new motor this won’t even be the same car.

So here is my question:
If I get the engine replaced with a crate engine with 0 miles, do you think that the insurance company will reinstate full coverage?

The vehicle is still a salvaged vehicle – as it has a salvaged title – regardless of if the engine was replaced. It’s up to each own discretion if they want to offer full coverage. Again, just because it got a new engine – does NOT change the fact that the vehicle is still a salvaged vehicle and holds a salvaged title – the DMV will not change the fact that it holds a salvaged title.

Auto Insurance coverage — How much Liability and Medical?

Filed in Auto Insurance Coverage 3 Comments

I got a couple of questions about about . Namely, what’s the best amount of liability and to select. 1) For the liability, I know it’s wise to get the best liability that one can afford to cover your assets. But how about if one also gets umbrella coverage. For example, if one gets an umbrella coverage at a $2 million limit and the liability limit for the auto insuarance is $300,000 or $500,000, does it make sense to select the $500,000 or is it better to select the $300,000 limit since the umbrella coverage would kick in? 2) for medical, is this redundant coverage and not needed because wouldn’t the liability portion also cover ? Or is it wise to get this, for example, if a passenger is not insured (no health insurance), so the medical part would help out in that case?

Thanks.

1 – liability coverage is very cheap. The difference between the 300 and the 500 is probably only dollars a year.

When you start an umbrella policy, the has certain limits that you have to have. Usually it is the highest that they have – (ie 25, 50, 100, 300, 500). They wont cover you until the first part has been attained – ie if they want you to have a limit of 500K and yours is only 300K they wont cover you until you hit the 500. (you would be responsible for the difference). I’m sure you have a respectable agent that would ensure that you are adequately covered to prevent this from happening.

As for the medical coverage – this would cover passengers in your car etc… There would also be a threshold that you would have to meet prior to the umbrella policy picking up the tab. I would recommend getting this coverage because it, like liability, is also very cheap.

How much auto insurance coverage should I carry???

Filed in Auto Insurance Coverage 4 Comments

I am in AZ I think my coverage is too high and I’m trying to get on a tighter budget. I don’t want to regret lowering my coverage though. All deductables are $500 & everything is $100,000/$300,000. It just seems like aot of coverage for an 06 Chevy Malibu.

If you are involved in an at fault accident and/or your vehicle is stolen and you can afford a $1000 deductible, go ahead and increase your deductible. If not, keep the $500.

Don’t mess with those . State minimum requirements will not protect you if you are legally responsible for a severe injury and or a significant amount of . Your insurance will pay up to the limits, and you are still on the hook for any settlement/judgment beyond your limits. What are your PD limits? You should have at least $50k. What happens if you rearend a new Mercedes and total it? AZ’s minimum limits will not be enough.

Can my finance company take my car if I don’t get full coverage auto insurance?

Filed in Auto Insurance Coverage 6 Comments

I just bought a car and got only the legal minimum insurance which is liability. My finance company is threating to take my car if I don’t get full coverage. I don’t have full coverage because it’s too expensive. They want me to get full coverage because it helps protect them. Can they take my car if I don’t get full coverage?

your should not have let you get just liability on the car. i don’t know if the insurance company can take the car. the insurance company is not just trying to protect themselves, but you also. if you couldn’t afford full coverage, then why did you buy a car that needed to be financed?

6 Tips for Cheaper Young Driver Auto Insurance

Filed in Auto Insurance Coverage 7 Comments

Do you need to insure a younger driver, under 25 years old? If you have insurance shopped, you have probably found that covering that young person is one of the most expensive things about having them drive a car. Insurers consider teens and young adults as a very high risk group, and so they will charge more for that insurance. In fact, many parents have found that coverage costs more for their kids, then it does for them.

Tips to Insure A Younger Driver

1. Major auto nssurance companies love having all of a family’s insurance business. If your family has more than one car, more than one driver, or even a home to insure, you may do well to combine all of your coverage with the same company.

Do not always asume that your old company will give you the best deal though. It is always in your best interest to shop around for the insurer who really wants to compete for your family’s business.

2. Top companies also like defensive driving classes. Sometimes you can find driver’s education classes at a school, but these days you may have to pay for a private class. Be prepared to pay a few hundred dollars for classes and road training. However that cost should be offset by the money you will save on your policy. In addition, if the class helps a young driver operate their vehicle safely, than the costs are really minimal.

3. Good students, with a B average or above, may also qualify for additional discounts. Insurer statistics have shown that reponsible students just tend to be better drivers too.

4. Consider the type of car a younger driver will operate. Some cars are just cheaper to insure, and most companies offer discounts for or auto . In addition, you may be able to name your younger driver on the car in your family, if there is a choice, that is less expensive to cover. You may be able to get help from a qualified agent or company representative.

5. Do not choose a modified or specialty car for a younger driver. Statistics show insurers that a modified car will just run a higher risk of claims when driven by a younger operator. A sedate family sedan will probably be a more prudent choice than a sporty, high horsepower car. Save that for when the driver is older and more mature.

6. Shop around online. The task of calling dozens of local insurers with all of your specific details may take hours or days. But an online form allows you to key in your details one time. Then you can simply hit the submit button and relax because the most competitive insurers will send you their offers for affordable policies and premiums.

If actually teaching a son or daughter to drive is one of the toughest things you have to do, then finding a good and affordable auto policy may be the secondd hardest. However, you can certainly take some simple steps to find lower prices. , and drive safely.

All Auto Insurance is not created equal!

Filed in Auto Insurance Coverage 3 Comments

Contrary to what you may have heard all auto insurance is not
created equal. A quick search on the net will quickly reveal
different rates, different policies, and different terms, so how
is one to sort through all the clutter.

Well the first thing you may want to do is visit the all auto
insurance center which is a resource center that explains auto
insurance in detail. You can also search the net and visit
plenty of other good sites to better understand your coverage.

There are many things that affect your . Your
driving record, how many tickets you’ve had in the past, where
you live, how much you drive, what type of car you have, what
type of coverage you buy, and where you buy your insurance
company.

have reported saving up to 40% by purchasing auto
insurance online. The most important thing to remember when
shopping online is to purchase your insurance from a reputable
insurance company. You can always check the rating of the
insurance company you are planning to deal with.

You should always get at least 5 or 6 quotes so you can compare
thoroughly. When comparing make sure you are comparing same
policies. If not it would rather be like comparing Victoria
Secrets lingerie to Walmart lingerie. Not a fair comparison!

You will need to be able to provide the company you are asking
for a quote from with information relating to your driving
record. There is no point in fibbing. Because the auto insurance
company will validate all information you provide. If you lie
your rates will go up or the insurance company may cancel your
policy.

All auto insurance is not created equal for many reasons.
Companies use a formula to determine rates. We won’t get into
the details of the formula but basically they calculate out the
number of drivers they cover, the costs for the previous year
including operating, accident, and liability claims, then they
do some math and come out with their rates. Much is determined
by the amount of payouts they’ve had.

We mentioned earlier about purchasing from an insurance company
that is rated well. If you save a bundle of money but the
insurance company you purchased your policy from has a tendency
not to honor and pay out on claims but rather weasels their way
out. Then the savings aren’t worth anything. Or if the insurance
company is a fly by night operation here today and gone
tomorrow, they’ll be gone with your money and you won’t have
insurance. No savings in that scenario! So make sure to check!
Unless of course you recognize the insurance company.

Companies like Geico, Allstate, Hartford, ,
Progressive, and of course several other big companies can be
found online.

Most companies offer online quotes which is very handy. No more
sitting on the telephone waiting to speak to an agent. No more
driving half way across the city to get rates then driving half
way around the city to get another rate then…. Okay I’m sure you
get the picture! It’s tiring just thinking about it. It’s so
much easier just to pull up a chair and put your mouse to work.

Hopefully we’ve brought to your attention that all auto
insurance is not created equal. We thought we’d mention it again
just incase  So shop around and save money!
